The Top 5 Tulamben Dive Sites You Shouldn’t Miss

Top 5 Tulamben Dive Sites

While there are over 15 notable dive locations in the area, five specific sites consistently stand out for their photography opportunities, marine diversity, and overall experience.
For a comprehensive look at what this region offers, you can explore all dive sites here.

USAT Liberty Wreck – Bali’s Most Famous Shipwreck

The crown jewel of Tulamben diving is undoubtedly the USAT Liberty Wreck. This 120-metre-long World War II cargo ship sits just metres from the shore, making it one of the world’s most accessible wreck dives. Resting on a black sand slope, the wreck starts at about 5 metres deep and descends to 30 metres, making it suitable for snorkelers, beginners, and seasoned pros alike.

Decades of submersion have transformed the steel structure into a vibrant artificial reef covered in soft corals and gorgonian fans. The biodiversity here is staggering. You can expect to see schooling jackfish (trevally), bumphead parrotfish, great barracuda, and pygmy seahorses. If you look closely at the sand, you might spot garden eels or colourful nudibranchs, while blacktip reef sharks occasionally patrol the deeper sections.

The Drop-Off Wall is Tulamben’s Most Famous Dramatic Underwater Cliff

The Drop-Off wall, is a short distance from Mimpi Resort Tulamben. This site has a diverse landscape and the underwater cliff is over 70 meters deep.

Wide-angle photographers will tell you that the breathtaking landscape is complemented by the gorgonian fans that cling to the cliff face. Among the rocks, one can find moray eels, octopuses, and longnose hawkfish hiding within their nooks. Dogtooth tuna, eagle rays, and reef sharks can be seen swimming about the blue.

Coral Garden – The Best Spot for Macro Photography

The Coral Garden is a bright, shallow reef that runs along the shallow coast between the Liberty Wreck and the Drop-Off. Because of the 3 to 15 m depth range, you can either snorkel or dive. The water is limp and the visibility is great, so this is a great spot.

Because of the fake reef structures, underwater photographers can capture a variety of subjects. You can see blue and yellow ribbon eels, elegant ghost pipefish, and mantis shrimp. It is also one of the best sites to see a lot of anemonefish (also known as clownfish), cuttlefish, and nudibranchs.

Kubu Reef – Big Fish Sightings and Gorgonians

As the most pristine diving site in the area, Kubu can be accessed with a short drive along the north coast. At this site, divers can see enormous gorgonian sea fans at a depth of approximately 20 meters which make for excellent photographic opportunities.

Larger marine animals such as napoleon wrasse, barracudas and turtles, and schools of bumpshead parrotfish that cruise along the reef are also frequent sights.

Seraya – Bali’s Best Macro and Muck Diving

If you enjoy searching for the bizarre and unusual, Seraya Secrets should be a top of your list. This special muck dive site consists of black sand slopes, and over the sand, divers will spot scattered sponge and small coral outcrops.

It may not look like much at first, but Seraya is a gold pot for treasure hunters with a macro camera. It is home to a number of indiscernible marine animals, which are Bali’s most cryptic, such as the frogfish, the harlequin and tiger shrimps, and different species of seahorses, as well as pygmy cuttlefish and a myriad of nudibranchs.
