From a Legendary Wreck to A Stunning Drop-off, Tulamben Diving Has It All

Tulamben and its surrounding area has so many attractive dive sites that offer thrill and excitement.

From a famous World War I wreck to a lively coral garden and a dramatic drop-off, there’s something for every diver. Gentle currents and typically easy diving conditions make it perfect for all level of divers. Many are also shore dives.

The beautiful Coral Garden is very own house reef, just steps away from the resort.

Most of the popular tulamben dive sites are shore dives and are easily accessible from the resort

USAT LIBERTY WRECK (TULAMBEN)


The 120 meters long WWII American cargo ship sunk right at the shore of Tulamben beach in 1942. Decades worth of coral has grown on the wreck, becoming home to a diverse marine life. An excellent site for photography.

Depth: 5 – 30 meters (16 – 98 feet)

Marine life: Trevally, Leaf Scorpion, Frog fish, Pygmy Sea Horses, Giant Barracudas, Surgeonfish, Ghost Pipefish, Nudibranchs, Blacktip Reef Shark and if you’re lucky, even Eagle Ray. Bump-head parrotfish, napoleon wrasse and barracuda are regularly spotted around the wreck.

DROP-OFF WALL (TULAMBEN)


Just a few steps from the resort, discover the underwater cliffside (drops down to 70+ meters!) covered in corals, gorgonian fans, and sponges.

Depth: 5 – 30+ meters (16 – 98+ feet)

Marine life: A diverse array of marine critters, moray eels, mantis shrimp, dog tooth tuna, octopus, longnose hawkfish, anemonefish and more! If you’re lucky, even Black-tip Reef Sharks, Groupers, Stingrays.

CORAL GARDEN (TULAMBEN)


This location is a renowned spot for underwater photographers and enthusiasts of macro-life, characterized by a vibrant coral-filled shallow reef, exquisite statues, and an abundance of unique marine creatures.

Depth: 3 – 15 meters (10 – 50 feet)

Marine life: Fantastic coral, sponges and fans. Angelfish, bumphead parrotfish, triggerfish, reef fish. Elusive species like ghost pipefish, leaf scorpion fish, and harlequin and mantis shrimps. It is a haven for captivating nudibranches. Vibrant blue and yellow ribbon eels. Extensive patches of anemones and clownfish. Visitors may also have the chance to witness squid, cuttlefish, and impressive schools of trevally, sweetlip, and snapper, accompanied by the occasional presence of black and white tip reef sharks gracefully patrolling the area.

KUBU (TULAMBEN)


Kubu is a stunning expanse of reef extending into the sea. At a depth of 20 meters, a magnificent, expansive Gorgonian fan awaits, providing a breathtaking sight accompanied by the likelihood of encountering Barracudas, Napoleon fish, Bumphead Parrot fish, Theira batfish, and impressive table corals.

Depth: 15-30 meters (50 – 98 feet)

Marine life: Good with variety of hard and soft coral, sponges and fans. Sweetlips, turtles, barracuda, trevally and triggerfish. Barracudas, Napoleon fish, Bump-head Parrot fish, Theira batfish.

PALUNG PALUNG (TULAMBEN)

Palung Palung means “bowls”, which are formed by drop-offs, slopes and overhangs that are inhabited by soft and hard corals. Here, divers can get great wide angle shots of Bumphead Parrotfish, Whitetip and Black-tip Reef Sharks, and great selection of Sting Rays.

Depth: 5 – 30 meters (16 – 98 feet)

Marine life: Denise’s Pygmy Seahorse, Fusilier, Redtooth Triggerfish, Butterfly Fish, Nudibranch, Jawfish, Garden Eels, Day Octopus, Black Saddle Grouper, Bumphead Parrotfish, White-tip and Black-tip Reef Sharks, Sting Rays.

ALAMANDA (TULAMBEN)

This is a protected nature reserve, where spearfishing is prohibited. There are few divers who visit, so you may have peace and quiet.

Depth: 10 – 30 meters (33 – 98 feet)

Marine life: Beautiful covered coral slope, with gigantic sponge formations and Gorgonian Seafans. Napolean Wrasse, Bumpheads, occasionally Manta Rays, Eagle Rays, Thresher, Hammerhead Sharks, Sea Turtles.

SERAYA (TULAMBEN)

This black sand slope is an absolute paradise for macro enthusiasts and photographers, showcasing scattered patches of reef and sponge that conceal an extraordinary array of macro life.

Depth: 3 – 35 meters (10 – 115 feet)

Marine life: From vibrant nudibranchs to various species of ghost pipefish, pygmy cuttlefish, frogfish, boxer crabs, and seahorses, Harlequin shrimps, Tiger shrimps, Honeymoon crab, Frog fish, Spider fish, Ghost pipe fish, Spider crabs, and Scorpion fish, the diversity seems endless.

BATU KELEBIT (TULAMBEN)

Remarkable Tulamben dive site renowned for its magnificent coral formations and its suitability for deep dives and technical diving, with depths exceeding 60 meters.

Depth: Average depth of 25 meters (82 feet)

Marine life: Giant Napoleon fish, Eagle rays, Sharks, schools of Humphead Parrot fish, Green Turtles and Scorpion fish.

EMERALD (TULAMBEN)

There is a sunken car and other artificial reef elements on the sandy slope. Also, an abundant amount of Pygmy Seahorses!

Depth: 5 – 30 meters (16 – 98 feet)

Marine life: Pygmy Seahorses, Hairy Squat Lobster, Cuttlefish, Goby, Dartfish, Helmut Gurnard, Nudibranch, Ghost Pipefish, Octopus, Lion

MELASTI (TULAMBEN)

Most famous for the Donut Dorid and Shaun the Sheep Nudibranch. Great for muck diving and not a crowded Tulamben dive site.

Depth: 3 – 30 meters (10 – 98 feet)

Marine life: Mantis Shrimp, Harlequin Shrimp, Frogfish, Gobies, Ghost Pipefish, Lionfish, Scorpion Fish, Cuttlefish, Octopus, Shaun the Sheep Nudibranch, Donut Dorid.

PYRAMIDS (AMED)

This captivating site combines a natural coral reef with an artificial reef crafted from hollow concrete blocks—carefully constructed in 1995 by Balinese diving associations. The 20 pyramids, varying in size, serve as thriving habitats for a myriad of marine life.

Depths: 5 – 30 meters (16 – 98 feet)

Marine life: This Tulamben dive site is home to shrimps, moray eels, lionfish, scorpionfish, pygmy seahorses, octopuses, and a variety of nudibranches. It offers great opportunities for underwater photographers with frequent sightings of green turtles, blue spotted stingrays, and diverse nudibranches. Late afternoon brings the presence of reef sharks, barracudas, and giant trevallys, adding excitement to the dive.

JEMELUK BAY (AMED)

The marine ecosystem in this small coral reef is teeming with a diverse range of captivating creatures

Depths: 12 – 22 meters (39 – 72 feet)

Marine life: From lobsters, shrimp, and goby sets to anemones hosting delightful clownfish, Blue-spotted rays, parrotfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, and moray eels, the abundance of marine life is truly remarkable. Additionally, encounters with turtles, reef sharks, and the enchanting Bargibanti pygmy seahorses further enhance the allure of this underwater paradise.

BOGA WRECK (KUBU)

Just a 5 mins drive from the resort, you can find another spectacular wreck dive site. The Boga is a Dutch-built cargo ship that was purposely sunk in 2011 to become an artificial reef. It is still mainly intact, and many divers love to take photos with its wheel and other objects surrounding the ship (including status and a VW car!).

Depths: 18 meters – 40 meters (59 feet – 131 feet)

Marine life: Moray eels, Lion Fish, schools of Barracuda and Trevally, Batfish, octopus, nudibranchs, lobsters, corals.
