Menjangan Island Boasts Rich Biodiversity and Gentle Conditions

The most popular dive sites are located at Menjangan Island, a protected wildlife marine reserve about 30 minutes by boat from the resort.

A daily boat to the Island departs at 09:00am after breakfast, directly from the resort’s gazebo jetty.

For two dives, arrival back to the resort is at approximately 02:00pm, thus leaving an ample amount of time to enjoy the resort’s facilities.

POS 1 MENJANGAN ISLAND


Gentle currents, dive can begin at shore or from boat. Snorkeling is also great here. A bright variety of marine life and exotic corals formations.

Visibility: 20-25 meters

Depth: 3 – 40 meters (10 – 130 feet)

Diving conditions: Gentle currents

Average water temperature: 27 – 30 C

Underwater topography: Exotic coral formation. Crevices and fissures along the reef. There is a mass of abundant fan coral close to the drop-off which descends to more than 40m. There is a broad channel which leads to the beach.

Marine life: Groupers and bigeyes live in the reef. The top of the reef is a great place to see a variety of sea anemones and cheeky clownfish. Sergeant major fish may be found along the reef top. Powder blue and black tang fish, emperor angelfish, juvenile and mature wrasse fish, giant sweetlips fish all reside here.

POS 2 MENJANGAN ISLAND


Gigantic Gorgonians, a plethora of corals and marine life. Great for macro photography.

Visibility: 20-25 meters

Depth: 3 – 40 meters (10 – 130 feet)

Diving conditions: Calm currents

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Underwater topography: A continuous walls
surrounds this end of the island, dropping from a
couple of meters to over 50 meters deep. Endless array
of fan corals some nearly 3 m high. Gorgonians and
delicate coral trees adorn barrel sponges.

Marine life: Profusion of soft corals, sponges, small
Gorgonians, large gorgonians moray eels and lionfish.
Here, where we meet the waters travelling down the
northeast of Menjangan, there is an upwelling of cold
waters (ie: thermoclines) from the deep ocean. This
sometimes brings with it turtles, manta rays, sharks, an
occasional mola-mola and other pelagics. May also see
titan triggerfish, trevally jack fish, Anthias, chromis,
gobies, scorpionfish, angelfish, Lionfish, stonefish, and
crocodile fish.

CAVE POINT MENJANGAN ISLAND


This site gets its name from the caves along the reef found 9–12 m underwater. It is very safe to explore. The caves are heavens for fish and invertebrates, like the nudibranchs and tiny fish that live amongst the corals and tube sponges. The morning sunshine creates a dramatic photography setting of the reef.

Depth: 3 – 40 meters (10 – 130 meters)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving conditions: Medium currents, suitable for snorkelers

Underwater topography: Soft corals and Gorgonians. Tubastrea corals enter from holes 3–9m deep. Gorgonians poke out from the wall as Well as clamps and brittle stars.

Marine life: Orange-lined triggerfish, blackspotted puffer fish, and you may occasionally see barracuda fish here.

BAT CAVES MENJANGAN ISLAND


Fun cave and reef-top activities. A good site for snorkeling.

Visibility: 15-25 meters

Depth: 3-27 meters (10-90 feet)

Average water temperature: 27-29 C

Diving conditions: Great for snorkeling, generally mild currents

Underwater topography: Small bats inhabit the caves on the waterline of Menjangan’s eastern wall. The bat caves are a continuation from Pos 2.

Marine life: School of fish including tuna, jack pompano and fusiliers. A resident Barracuda may sometimes appear. A lot of fish action on the reef.

EEL GARDEN MENJANGAN ISLAND


This west end of the Island has a bit of everything, beginning with a wall to a shallow sand full of garden eels, hence the name. Divers can enjoy relaxed diving here and great diversity of reef.

Visibility: 15 – 25 meters

Depth: 3 – 18 meters (10 – 60 feet)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving conditions: Usually drift dives around the south-west point

Underwater topography: This reef has some of purest sand in indonesia with large coral heads and formations, the bottom rarely dips below 18m. It is home to colourful, diverse sponges.

Marine life: large puffer fish, batfish, eagle ray, stingray, and mantas glide through channels, and the occasional dolphin has been seen. You will find Gorgonian fan with longnose hawkfish. This area is also known for sightings of white-tip and black-tip reef sharks, dogtooth tuna, small schools of barracudas, Turtles, and of course napoleon wrasse. From 25m we slowly ascend up the slope over many soft corals, until reaching a huge colony of garden eels.

CORAL GARDENS MENJANGAN ISLAND


Great for divers and snorkelers with shallow reefs and beautiful walls. Wonderful for macro photography.

Visibility: 15 – 25 meters

Depth: 3 – 40 meters (10 – 130 feet)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving conditions: Many entry points have sandy bottom that creep over into fields of flowing soft corals. Strong current determine entry points. Underwater topography: This site is a drop-off, but a more gradual slope than the walls of its south-coast competitors.

Marine life: Burrowing creatures including the blind shrimp, goby, reef fish, nudibranchs, big-eyed trevally, titan triggerfish, many clownfish in their anemones and often a surprising number of scorpionfish. Also, a variety of pygmy seahorses.

TEMPLE SLOPE MENJANGAN ISLAND


Diverse marine life, great for snorkeling and all level of divers.

Visibility: 15-25 meters

Depths: 3-40 meters (10-130 feet)

Average water temperature: 27-29 C

Diving conditions: Great for all levels of divers, a delight for snorkelers

Underwater topography: Sloping dive site, shallow reef-top. Vibrant soft corals. gorgonian fans and sponge life.

Marine life: Lobster hide themselves under coral and overhangs. May see blue spotted fish especially around the sandy terrain, looking for food. White-tip sharks often rest on sandy plains at about 30 m.

ANKER WRECK MENJANGAN ISLAND


Great wall diving and deep diving. Colourful corals, one of oldest wreck in bali, built in late 1800s that sunk during World War I.

Visibility: 15 – 25 meters

Depth: 5,5 – 40 meters (18 – 130 feet)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving conditions: Currents can be strong and drift diving is good here, best for diving on the wreck.

Underwater topography: The anchor rest 5,5m along a deep slope. The slope can get quite steep in places and has canyons and crevices. This site is within the marine reserve.

Marine life: Lots of varieties of nudibranchs, sometimes frogfish and odd sanddwellers. Schooling around the pieces of wreck are bannerfish, fusiliers and batfish.

Very gentle current, dive can begin at shore from the resort or boat (5 mins), great option for macro underwater photography.

Diving conditions: Typically very gentle currents Underwater topography: Nice wall and steep slope just east of the entrance with small creatures in all depths

Marine life: Mandarin fish, harlequin ghost pipefish, porcelain crabs, various shrimp, anemone fish and tiny lion fish.

NIGHT DIVE AT MIMPI CHANNEL


Excellent night diving site with an opportunity to reveal some of the sea’s most elusive creatures.

Visibility: 5 – 10 meters

Depth: 0 – 10 meters (0 – 33 feet)

Average water temperature: 24 – 25 C

Diving conditions: Typically very gentle currents Underwater topography: Shore dive with muddy bottom entry up to 10 meters

Marine life: Almost textbook description for nudibranch habitat and a great site to see mandarin fish mating.

MACRO HEAVEN AT GILIMANUK

 

A dream for macro photographers.

Nudibranchs, pygmy seahorse and many more can be seen when muck diving at nearby Gilimanuk sites.

Diving to these sites can be arranged by car.

SECRET BAY GILIMANUK


An easy shore dive with water temperature on average 5 C colder than most other sites around West Bali. This is due to the nearby deep water cold currents, which are directed into the Bay by upswelling and the daily tidal changes.

Because of this cold water, along with the shallow sand and sea grass environment, this place has a unique blend of tropical, temperate, Indian and Pacific ocean species all living together in the same Bay.

It is a 20 mins car ride from the resort.

Visibility: 5 – 10 meters

Depth: 0 – 10 meters (0 – 33 feet)

Average water temperature: 24 – 25 C

Diving conditions: Calm, shallow and clear waters. Dive in the morning when visibility is good. Bring a 5mm wetsuit.

Marine life: Pipe fish, sea urchins, yellow sea horses, cuttlefish, flatworms, Nudibranch, pleurobranchs, eel – like hairtailblennies, puffers, milkfish, Ambonscorpionfish, frogfish.

PURI JATI GILIMANUK


One of the best macro (“muck”) diving sites in bali, may see the famous mimic octopus. It is a 50 mins car ride from the resort.

Visibility: 5 – 20 meters

Depth: 5 – 20 meters (16 – 65 feet)

Average water temperature: 28 – 31 C

Diving conditions: None to moderate currents

Marine life: Mimic octopus, frog fish, stargazer, seamoth, dragonet, ghost pipefish, Seahorse, cuttlefish, squid, emperor shrimp, anemone shrimp, squat lobster, box crab, peacock mantis, shrimp, juvenile batfish, nudibranch etc.

Marine life: Variety of corals and invertebrates, including table corals, giant leather corals, sponges, and nudibranchs. Red “flaming scallops”, eagle rays as well as schools of fusiliers, jacks, and silversides. Lots of strange & unusual creatures.

TEMPLE GARDEN PEMUTERAN


An underwater temple complex built in the 1990s. Divers can find a variety of large stone statues and a 4 metre high Balinese gateway.

Visibility: 5 – 20 meters

Depth: 5 – 30 meters (16 – 98 feet)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving conditions: None to moderate currents

Marine life: Cleaning station with schooling baitfish, Gorgonian fans, critters, electric clamps, small bommie inhabited by small fish, sponges, crinoids etc.

BIO WRECK PEMUTERAN


A mixture of natural and manmade reef with lots of corals and critters inhabiting the site. Great for snorkeling.

Visibility: 8 – 30 meters

Depth: 5 to 30 metres (16 – 98 feet)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving Conditions: Typically gentle currents

Marine life: Blackspot snappers, nudibranchs, many anemone fish species, porcelain crabs, pufferfish, twinspot snappers, lion fish, pipe fish, cornetfish, frogfish, ghostpipefish and the occasional turtle.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS PEMUTERAN


Excellent corals form a nice garden where fish likes to congregrate.

Visibility: 8 – 30 meters

Depth: 5 to 30 metres (16 – 98 feet)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving Conditions: Typically gentle currents

Marine life: Occasonally big animals like eagle ray, whale shark, reef shark. A school of tuna, jacks, fusiliers, snappers, handful of small cleaner shrimp, leaf scorpionfish, mantis shrimps, nudibranchs, barrel sponge crabs, scorpionfish, redtooth triggerfish.

TEMPLE WALL PEMUTERAN


Located in front of seaside temples, it is a favorite for night dive. A steep wall with abundant marine life.

Visibility: 8 – 20 meters

Depth: 3 to 26 metres (10 – 85 feet)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving Conditions: Typically gentle currents

Marine life: Large fans, sponges, and soft corals, the rare “flaming scallop”, nudibranches, pygmy sea horse, orangutan crabs, squat lobsters, batfish, schooling bigmouth mackerels, reef sharks and crocodilefish

NAPOLEON REEF PEMUTERAN


Gently sloping reef with a flat top. It is a breeding spot for many marine life with incredible variety of corals and the occasional squid, cuttlefish and rays.

Visibility: 10 – 35 meters

Depth: 5 to 30 metres (16 – 98 feet)

Average water temperature: 27 – 29 C

Diving Conditions: Typically gentle currents

Marine life: Large cuttlefish. Giant table corals, gorgonian fans, colourful soft and hard corals, and giant barrel and other sponges co-existing with nudibranchs, egg cowries and a variety of other invertebrates. Red fire gobies, moray eels, ribbon eels, mantis shrimps, octopus, leaf scorpionfish. May see bigger animals like whale sharks, whitetip reef shark, eagle rays and humphead parrotfish.
